In the heart of San Diego County, the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) is proving what’s possible when strategic vision meets meaningful action. CVESD is the largest elementary school district in California.
Their high volume of students creates a diverse community where many students, especially students participating in afterschool, may not have computers or access to the internet at home.
CVESD’s Success Plan with Skill Struck included a bold objective: equip all 50 elementary schools with engaging, standards-aligned computer science experiences accessible to after-school students. Skill Struck has been partnering with CVESD since 2021 to prepare their young learners for a tech-driven future, regardless of background, technology access, or zip code.
What began as a small rollout in just 6 schools in 2021 has grown into a thriving, 24-school operation and still-growing partnership. CVESD started using Skill Struck with the YMCA as an afterschool program, and now all students in after-school programs have access to Skill Struck.

With shared values and a commitment to equitable access, CVESD and Skill Struck worked side by side to expand the impact of computer science education. To get teachers using Skill Struck in their after-school clubs, a usage competition co-hosted by Skill Struck and CVESD teams in late 2024 was launched. Designed to encourage deeper platform adoption, the competition sparked a friendly race among schools, and the results were remarkable.

Real Impact, Real Growth
These numbers tell a story that represents the rising confidence, creativity, and capability of CVESD students. And it’s not slowing down! With every passing year, the partnership with Skill Struck grows deeper in supporting professional development, scaffolding curriculum across grade levels, and creatively engaging students and teachers.
Looking Ahead
The CVESD and Skill Struck partnership is a model for what’s possible when equity meets opportunity. Together, we’re proving that early, consistent exposure to computer science isn't just for some students, it’s for all.
